Mother’s Day in Nepal

Nepal has a beautiful way of blending tradition, emotion, and time itself. If you look closely, even the calendar tells a story. Unlike much of the world, Nepal follows the Bikram Sambat calendar, which is ahead of the Gregorian calendar by about 56 to 57 years. This means the New Year in Nepal usually begins in mid April. In fact, it was just celebrated yesterday, bringing fresh energy, hope, and a sense of renewal across the country.

The Nepali New Year is not just a date change. It feels personal. Families gather, temples are visited, and people take time to reflect on the past year while setting intentions for the new one.

Not long after the New Year comes one of the most heartfelt celebrations in Nepal, Mothers Day, known locally as Mata Tirtha Aunsi. This day is deeply emotional and spiritual. People honor their mothers with gifts, food, and time together. Children wake up early, prepare simple meals, and express their love through small but meaningful gestures. It is a celebration honoring the person who gave us life. For those whose mothers are no longer alive, there is a tradition of visiting Mata Tirtha, a sacred pond near Kathmandu, where they offer prayers and remember their love.

Happy Mother's Day!
